Ceftazidime pentahydrate
Indications/Uses
Severe infections, resp, ENT, skin & soft tissues, bone & joint, GI, biliary & abdominal infections, UTI, infections associated w/ dialysis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult 1 g 8 hrly or 2 g 12 hrly. Severe infection 2 g 8 or 12 hrly. Infant & childn >2 mth 30-100 mg/kg daily in 2-3 divided doses. Max: 6 g daily. Neonate & childn ≤2 mth 25-60 mg/kg daily in 2 divided doses. Elderly >80 yr Max: 3 g daily.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to cephalosporins.
Special Precautions
Hypersensitivity to penicillins. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Thrombophlebitis (IV route), local pain &/or inflammation (IM route), GI upset, CNS effect. Rarely, hypersensitivity reactions & transient haematological changes.
Drug Interactions
Nephrotoxic drugs.
